Frank Thomas Temporarily Benched
I just don’t get this one.
Yes, Frank Thomas is hitting .167/.306/.333. That’s in 72 PA. So what? Over 2005-2007, Frank has combined to hit .222/.323/.415 in April - a month which isn’t done yet, by the way.
Frank is still avoiding strikeouts well (18.1 %), walking a lot (15.3%) and hitting homers at the same rate as a year ago (Every 20 ABs this year, every 20.4 AB last year).
You know what’s different this year? Frank has been unlucky. His BABIP this year is .159, while last year it was .291. STOP PANICKING, GIBBY.
This is how you treat a hall-of-famer? Or, if you avoid sentiment and like to go for the pragmatic view, how in the world is Frank going to find his stroke sitting on the bench?
Frank is still one of the best players on this team, let him play.
Update:
Thomas has been released. Wow. The only way that this move is defensible, IMO is if:
1. Thomas wanted out and nobody would trade for him.
and/or
2. Lind will be our primary LF and Bonds will be DHing soon.
Really, what this does is give all the teams who need a DH but are too chicken to sign Bonds (Mariners, D-Rays) a fall-back option. Nice.
